Title: [REC] (2007)
Dir: Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza
Rating: ***** out of 5 stars
Sometimes all the hype is true. This movie is fucking INSANE. I only wish to Christ I could have seen it on a big screen, even though I might have literally shat my pants.
A reporter and cameraman for the late night tv show "While You're Sleeping" tag along with a group of firemen one night. They are sent on a routine call to an apartment complex where an old lady evidently needs help. When they arrive at the scene, they find the old woman covered in blood, but she is anything but helpless. She attacks the crew and injures a few people. As the panic-stricken residents try to flee the building, they discover they have been quarantined by the government - something about containing an infection. From there, we get the inevitable chain reaction of zombie attacks inside the building. All this is shot POV style ala Cloverfield.
The actors in this movie are very much to thank for its realism. They are all very believable and make you feel terrified for them. Furthermore, all the scares are perfectly placed and never feel cheap. There are a few parts that are incredibly creepy and/or scary. Few horror movies can achieve terror like this anymore. The makeup FX are damn good, and the zombies didn't look like the same recycled crap.
The film starts off a little slow in the scares department as the story and characters develop. It picks up speed rapidly, and everytime you think it can't possibly get any creepier, it does. It very much does. The ending is just...wow. You gotta see it. This is a truly scary movie, and I have not seen one in quite some time.
I recommend watching this with the lights off - it makes it that much better.
